Something wrong with SWAP allocation

One more question... the total space for RAID5 with 3x120Gb should not be 240Gb ?

But my total space is only 166Gb...

Hello FredQc,

At first glance, it seems normal that your SWAP partition is on all 3 disks as you've setup your RAID configuration in RAID 5.

By looking at the outputs also, I can see that your SWAP is equal to 3 x 8GB, which I would assume is the problem that you are experiencing as you simply wanted a total of 8 GB of SWAP.

When installing your OS, the SWAP will never be in RAID and will always be "number of disks" x "size specified". In the case, the easiest way to get that 8 GB of SWAP is to divide 8192 by 3 and use that instead.

We remain available if you have other questions about this problem.

P.S. In order for us OVH agent to assist you in the best way possible, you can add your SoyouStart ID in your profile so that we can either contact you directly or allow us to gather informations on your account.

What is /etc/fstab saying? What does /proc/mdstat say?

You've set up sda3 sdb3 sdc3 as "Swap" and not as RAID, so it's possible you didn't put them into a proper raid5, or if you did then it might break when you reboot.

So, I disabled the swap access in fdisk for the 2 other disks and I'm fine. But still, I don't understand how is this possible...

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a new server with 3 disks in RAID5. I indicated 8192MB (8GB) as the SWAP size but, it seems to use all the 3 drives at the same time.

top command return

Code:
Swap: 25162740k total
free -m return

Code:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 32070 680 31390 0 22 275
-/+ buffers/cache: 381 31688
Swap: 24572 0 24572
fdisk -a

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 5100 40958976 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda2 5100 13549 67867648 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda3 13549 14593 8387584 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 1 5100 40958976 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sdb2 5100 13549 67867648 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sdb3 13549 14593 8387584 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 * 1 5100 40958976 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sdc2 5100 13549 67867648 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sdc3 13549 14593 8387584 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Is this a bug or something ? How could I install the SWAP file on just ONE drive ?

Regards,

Fred
