ESXi, VMs, and Additional IPs

EDIT: I've made progress and added new information to the post

Hi there,

I've ordered a SYS server and provisioned it with ESXi. I can connect to the ESXi box via SSH and vSphere.

I've purchased one additional IP. I'm trying to get the Ubuntu VM I've deployed on ESXi to use it.

The Ubuntu VM connects to an ESXi VLAN (site_vlan), which connects directly to the 'vmnic0' adapter. The standard basic setup.

I have created a virtual MAC within the SYS panel, and assigned this to the Ubuntu VM manually through vSphere.

I have used the following values for networking

IP - purchased IP address in SYS panel
Netmask - Tried and
Gateway - Gateway of ESXi host x.x.x.254

route add x.x.x.254 dev eth0 (ESXi gateway)
route add default gw x.x.x.254

I can't even ping the gateway from the VM.

Where am I going wrong?

EDIT2: Solved.. after restarting networking Odd that it worked now given I had rebooted with the same config.

/etc/init.d/networking restart

I'm sure I saw 'Mark as solved' earlier but I can't seem to find it now. This is now resolved.
