Keep in mind your VPS does not have a dedicated graphics card. That means graphics will be processed by the CPU.
Kubuntu 14.04 default gui is KDE 4 - which will chew up around 30% of your CPU (1 core).
I've tried CentOS 7 with KDE Plasma and the gui chews up 100% of the CPU (1 core). I assume the same is true for Kabuntu 15.04
I've tried CentOS 7 with Cinnamon. Didn't check CPU usage. However Cinnamon crashes using X2GO
XFCE is easy to install. It uses very little CPU and works well with X2GO
